The Argus Singers
We are a mixed voice choir based in Chester-le-Street, with loyal members travelling to join us from all over the North East: with some coming from as far afield as Yorkshire and Lancashire. Our repertoire has something to suit all tastes, including sacred choral music, folk songs, spirituals, jazz swing and pop arrangements, and seasonal Christmas music.
Our Musical Director and Accompanists
Our Musical Director is Ian Murray, who has been with the choir since its inception as a bass, librarian and deputy MD.
Janet Trewick is our excellent accompanist ably supported by Colin Ibbertson on the bass.

Why "The Argus Singers"?
In 1980 when the choir was formed by former members of the Durham County Youth Choir all the usual names associated with Durham seemed over-used - Dunelm, Cathedral etc.
Then someone suggested naming the choir after the Argus:a mythical being with 100 eyes: since the choir has always numbered 50 or less, this name seemed both original and appropriate.

Around the same time the Durham Argus butterfly (thought to be extinct) was re-discovered.
